- Be aware that companies have the legal right to monitor employee's email, web browsing and IM activities.
- Get a good anti-virus software and make sure it has updated definition files--check for new definition files at least once every two weeks.
- Run Windows Update and download all "critical" updates to patch security holes in Microsoft's software.
- Use a good firewall or router if you have broadband access (DSL/Cable).
- Don't open attachments if the email subject and/or body seem generic and vague
- Send confidential attachments as zip files that are password protected.
- Pick a good password with at least 6 characters including numbers, letters and special characters.
- Have at least 2 different passwords so you can use one for common things and another for important things such as online banking.
- Sign up for a free email account (Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) and use it on forms that are not important to reduce junk mail to your primary account.
- Do not give your primary email, phone number, address and birthday unless absolutely necessary.
